Welcome to Mindfulness for Healing!
How can Mindfulness help with all that? Well read on… It’s an amazing journey!
Hundreds of studies have shown the benefits of mindfulness for everything from reducing stress to improving blood pressure, to being a better student, to dealing with anger, to pretty much anything you would like to have happen!
What is Mindfulness?
Well, I like to use Jon Kabat Zinn’s definition, because it’s very simple and functional:
Mindfulness means paying attention in a certain way:
In the moment…
And without judgement.
So how can that help me?
It’s not obvious, but what happens is that as we practice mindfulness, we are able to experience less and less stress, even when things are going wrong.
This is because we get more and more in touch with things AS THEY ARE, which has the advantage of helping us assess situations more clearly, and respond more skillfully.
We also get less and less attached to our wishes that things be different. Of course, we often want things to be different, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but our strong emotions about that can prevent us from really assessing the situation. And IN THIS MOMENT, things are AS THEY ARE, and so that’s where we have to start from. When we struggle against that, we waste a whole lot of energy and create a whole lot of stress. When we can be present to what is, we are free to make skillful choices to begin to change the situation.
So that sounds pretty easy. I guess I can just do that on my own, right?
Right! Um… sort of. The human mind has certain tendencies that make it very difficult to practice mindfulness. We have a lot of habits, anxieties, opinions, fears and numerous other obstacles that can get in our way.
Ok, so what do I do?
